Gathering Together

Where two or three are gathered in my name, i am there among
them. ~Matthew 18:20 (nrsv) Read Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

I remember playing church as a child. Neighborhood children,
school friends, family members, dolls, stuffed animals, and occasionally one of
our family pets made up the congregation. We took turns preaching, teaching,
serving Communion, singing, and taking an offering. Our services were never
very long, but we had a good time.

Recently, on a cold, winter Sunday morning, I remembered
those small childhood gatherings when only three church members in addition to
the worship leader, organist, and the pastor entered the sanctuary for worship.
No one else braved the cold to join us. Choosing not to be discouraged, we
worshiped together.

During a teaching on discipleship, Jesus reminded his
followers that where two or three gathered together in his name, he was there
with them. I did not realize it at the time, but Christ was with us when we
played church as children, just as he was with those of us who gathered in his
name on that cold Sunday morning.

Prayer: Lord God, no matter how many come
together, may we always worship you in spirit and in truth. Amen.

Thought for the Day: No matter how many people
I’m with, God meets me in worship.
